“Faulty electrical appliances, especially poorly maintained or incorrectly used cooling appliances, are the cause of many home fires,” said Mr Heath.
“FNQ residents should also be careful when it comes to the safety of ceiling fans which are often left on 24-hours, seven day a week across the summer months. The bearings in ceiling fans can overheat and be the cause of fire that can spread quickly into the roof.
It’s important residents check home cooling equipment is safe to operate. Improperly installed, damaged or misused equipment are frequent sources of preventable home fire incidents.
“Before switching on these types of appliances, residents should check for damaged cords, and blocked filters particularly in older equipment,” Mr Heath said.
Sure Insurance also cautioned householders to be careful when buying second-hand electrical appliances to thoroughly check the appliance is safe to use.
- Never attempt to fix or service electrical equipment yourself. Take appliances to a licensed electrician for all repairs.
- Check for damaged or exposed power points. Don’t use them – have them
- Check for frayed or damaged electrical cords on appliances. If damaged – don’t use the appliance – have it inspected and repaired by a licensed electrician.
- If an electrical appliance emits any odour or smoke, immediately turn it off at the power point and have it inspected and repaired by a licensed electrician.
- Inspect and regularly clean filters on air conditioners.
- Always switch off the appliance, turn it off at the power point and disconnect the cord when the appliance is not in use.
- Never leave an operating appliance, especially ceiling fans unattended for a long period of time or in operation while you’re not at home.
- Ensure home smoke alarms are operational.
- Check your home and contents insurance is current and up-to-date.
